Calculate Your Rising Sign
Enter your exact birth date, time, and city to compute your Ascendant using Western astronomical algorithms.
How to Use This Calculator
Using the Rising Sign calculator is straightforward, but the accuracy of your result depends entirely on the accuracy of your input. Here is what you need:
1. Your Exact Birth Date
Enter the date you were born. The calculator supports dates from 1800 onward for maximum historical timezone accuracy.
2. Your Exact Birth Time
This is the most critical input. The Ascendant moves through all 12 zodiac signs in a single day, changing signs approximately every two hours. A birth time that is off by even a few minutes can sometimes produce a different Rising Sign if you were born near a sign boundary.
Where to find your birth time: The best source is your official birth certificate. In the United States, the long-form birth certificate typically records the time of birth. You can also check hospital records or ask family members who were present.
3. Your Birth Location
Search for your birth city using the location field. The calculator needs your geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) and timezone to convert your local birth time to Universal Time (UTC) for the astronomical calculation.
When multiple locations share the same name (for example, Springfield, Illinois vs. Springfield, Missouri), the search results will show the state/region and country to help you select the correct location.
What the Calculator Does
When you click "Calculate My Rising Sign," the calculator performs the following steps entirely within your browser:
- Resolves your birth location to precise geographic coordinates and an IANA timezone.
- Converts your local birth time to UTC using historical timezone and daylight saving time rules.
- Calculates the Julian Day — a standard astronomical time value used by the Swiss Ephemeris.
- Computes the Ascendant — the exact ecliptic longitude of the point rising on your eastern horizon at that moment.
- Maps the longitude to one of the 12 tropical zodiac signs, along with the exact degree and minute within that sign.
Understanding Your Result
Your result shows the zodiac sign of your Ascendant (your Rising Sign), along with the exact degree within that sign. For example, "18° 24' Libra" means your Ascendant is at 18 degrees and 24 minutes of Libra.
The degree can be useful for understanding nuances. For instance, an Ascendant at 2° Libra may express differently than one at 28° Libra, though both are Libra Rising. If your Ascendant is near 0° or 29° of a sign, a small change in birth time could shift it to the adjacent sign — a concept known as being "on the cusp."
Privacy
This calculator processes all calculations locally in your browser using WebAssembly. Your birth date, time, and location are not transmitted to our servers or any third-party service. Only the location search query is sent to the Open-Meteo Geocoding API to retrieve geographic coordinates.
